The Greenlanders

This song was created for Game of Bands round 129 : "Sea Shanties"

Lyrics:

He returns to the gates of an empty homestead
They’ve all gone to Greenland with Erik the Red
Well this son of Herjolf’s a family man
He vows to sail westward and see them again

With no map and no compass he sets out from shore
Not a man in his crew been to Greenland before
Not the wisest of plans, this he’s quick to admit
But no place in Valhalla for norsemen who quit

Oars beating on toward the setting sun
The wind, it blows where it wills
Through the mist and the waves and the freezing rain
They have an oath to fulfill

After ten or so days of good wind in their sails
Dark clouds in the sky and the lash of the gales
Rowing hard through the storm but they can’t match its force
Caught in the tempest and drifting off course

Swept miles clear of Greenland toward some foreign sand
In wonder they gaze at this new westward land
A coast rich in timber, so vast and so green
A sight that no norsemen before them have seen

They turn back toward Greenland with stories to tell
Of the new land they saw and the storms that befell
Now new men build longships inspired by the tale
With Leif Erikson at the helm, they take sail

Oars beating on toward the setting sun
The wind, it blows where it wills
[Exit]
