Ballad of the Dread Red LaRue

This song was created for Game of Bands round 129 : "Sea Shanties"

Lyrics:

In sixteen-hundred ninety-three from Galway we set sail
For chilly arctic waters to go fishing for the whale
In passing of Clare Island, through thickest fog and gloom
A ship with blood-red sails spilled out, heralding our doom
Refrain: So it’s heave away, bullies, and kick her through,
Who’d ever set sail with the Dread Red LaRue?

As our ship was being boarded, our captain cried “Be brave!
Fight boldly and if not your lives, at least your pride you’ll save!”
But none could swing the cutlass well, or aim the pistol true
When under attack by maiden marines from the fiercest pirate crew.
Refrain: So it’s heave away, bullies, and kick her through,
Who’d ever set sail with the Dread Red LaRue?

Flowing waves of crimson hair gave their leader away
As she shouldered her blunderbuss when she’d won the day
“Tis a fine ship I’m getting,” said she, “and maybe I’ll sign some of you”
“Unless, that is, you’d rather sink than sail with LaRue!”
I didn't have to think for long, as I never was much for swimmin’
And so I took my chances with a crew half made of women
Refrain: So it’s heave away, bullies, and kick her through,
Who’d ever set sail with the Dread Red LaRue?

The youngest of the new recruits was a lively lad named Tucker
He was leering at LaRue’s first mate, and he brazenly asked to--
fffffaster than his words were spoke, and quicker than I could cuss
The etiquette onboard the ship was enforced by LaRue’s blunderbuss.
Refrain: So it’s heave away, bullies, and kick her through,
Who’d ever set sail with the Dread Red LaRue?

“While he’s still a-smoking” said she, “let’s go over a rule or two”
“This boy has acted like a swine, and so has died like one too.”
“What you reap when you sail with me will be just what you sow,
“Respect each other and you will see that respect for us all will grow”
Refrain: So it’s heave away, bullies, and kick her through,
Who’d ever set sail with the Dread Red LaRue?

We raided every single coast, and on every sea did roam
When a Letter of Marque came from the Queen and became our ticket home
Pardoned for our piracy, once more on solid ground
‘Twas no surprise as I looked around that LaRue could not be found.
Refrain: So it’s heave away, bullies, and kick her through,
Who’ll be next to sail with the Dread Red LaRue?

There’s many the erstwhile mariner, who of Captain Kidd will boast
And to Blackbeard or Barbarossa will raise a boisterous toast
But the pirates who got out alive really are quite few
And there’s none so rich in heart or gold as them what sailed with LaRue.
Refrain: So it’s heave away, bullies, and kick her through,
Who wouldn’t set sail with the Dread Red LaRue?
