Two weeks to take a song from conception to completion to competition!

Gray Bird (please come to us)

This song was created for Game of Bands round 213 : "Imaginary Cult Themes"

Lyrics:

Children gather round the fire
I have a story to tell
Once when I was young like you
the sickly men came

They built big towers to the clouds
They'd climb up and say her name
They called and called into the sky
And then the gray bird came

A great big beast so pure and clean
she flew so high above
and from her claws she dropped a feast
she roared and then flew off

She came and went like the moon
As gracious as the sun
We all lived like chiefs for years and years
We always had enough

One day the gray bird will come
and she'll bring us sugar and rum
tea, coffee and chewing gum

Please come to us gray bird
we need you once again
Please come to us gray bird
we need you once again

As fast as they came, the sickly men went
They called into the sky last time they called and called her name
She came down on a clearing the sickly men made
She picked them up and flew away

Now anytime there are no nuts and rivers have no trout
Any year in which the big rains never come
Anytime we go to sleep with stomachs big and loud
We climb upon the sky-high towers and call and call into the clouds:

Please come to us gray bird
we need you once again
Please come to us gray bird
we need you once again

.

Yeah one day the gray bird will come
and she'll bring us sugar and rum
tea, coffee and chewing gum

Please come to us gray bird
we need you once again
Please come to us gray bird
we need you once again

(70s cult singalong fadeout ensues)

-- in the WW2 pacific campaign, US soldiers set up airbases on previously uncontacted Melanesian islands, trading with the natives. After the war ended, many of those societies started to ritually imitate the behaviours of the soldiers in hope that they would return with their cargo, creating Cargo cults --
