Two weeks to take a song from conception to completion to competition!

Arma Virumque

This song was created for Game of Bands round 70 : "Ancient Greece and/or Rome"

Lyrics:

It was for sweet Lavinia
Great King Latinus? daughter
The Trojans and the Rutuli
Engaged in mutual slaughter
?
The foremost champions of the day
Amid the clang and clatter
Aeneas on the former side
And Turnus on the latter

Of pain and death both unafraid
Both feared throughout the land
In single combat they engaged
To win the lady?s hand

First Turnus raised a massive rock
And, stumbling in his gait,
He launched toward his enemy
Its mighty, crushing weight

But Turnus? boulder landed short,
The gods forsook his side
And all his efforts came to naught
No matter what he tried

At last Aeneas hurled his lance
And Turnus? thigh bone broke
Disabled now, upon the ground,
These are the words he spoke

Chorus

My death, I have deserved it,
And the gods have deemed it just
I do not fear to face it
And yet beg you now I must
I have a poor old father
Surely, you?ve a father too,
To spare mine from this grief
Would be the noble thing to do
You know you?ve won the victory
And soon you?ll take my bride
Don?t let my father die alone
No scion by his side

Aenas? heart began to melt
To hear his vanquished foe
But when he glimpsed his golden belt
He clenched in rage and woe

?To see the trophy that you wear
Of Pallas whom I cherish
Is more offense than I can bear
For Pallas you must perish?

Chorus

My death, I have deserved it,
And the gods have deemed it just
I do not fear to face it
And yet beg you now I must
I have a poor old father
Surely, you?ve a father too
To spare mine from this grief
Would be the noble thing to do
You know you?ve won the victory
And soon you?ll take my bride
Don?t let my father die alone
No scion by his side

Aeneas dealt the final blow
The blood streamed on the ground
While Turnus? death was met with cheers
And shouts from all around

And so was ended Virgil?s tale
In combat hand-to-hand
From days when men were hard and hale
And poets in demand
