Two weeks to take a song from conception to completion to competition!

Hi Jolly! and the US Camel Corps

This song was created for Game of Bands round 113 : "Once Upon a Time in the West"

Lyrics:

RAP VERSE 1
Before the South's Confederacy,
Jefferson Davis was US Secretary of War.
They had to transport food, supplies and artillery
To New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and California

A lot of that was desert,
but the army needed supplies
But the US was pretty broke then,
Mexican War sucked the money dry

The US frontier had doubled in length,
And travelers were quite exposed
Although the states themselves had strength
The mountains and deserts imposed

Bone dry and without water
The horses just couldn't survive
But with a hump and feet broader
A camel would be able to thrive.

CHORUS
The US went to Turkey
To get camels for 30 Grand
Came back with 70 quirky
Big animals for the plan
Hadji Ali came along with them
The camel trainer, he knew the score
His name, misheard by the army men
Hi Jolly! and the Camel Corps

RAP VERSE 2
But the army had always thought
Horses and camels could ride in pairs
But the camels that they had bought
Made the horses much too scared

The camels were also hateful
bad attitude and smelled so poor
but the breaking point was the fateful
eruption of the Civil War

The US Camel Corps was excused
but now what were the camels' places
some say they were all set loose
others think that Jefferson Davis

Took the camels to the confederacy
hauling supplies thru Mexico
Pack animals tough and messy
and auctions caused the next to go

CHORUS
The US went to Turkey
To get camels for 30 Grand
Came back with 70 quirky
Big animals for the plan
Hadji Ali came along with them
The camel trainer, he knew the score
His name, misheard by the army men
Hi Jolly! and the Camel Corps

RAP VERSE 3

A soldier bought some others
sold them to Canada to haul some gold
But rocky terrain made their hooves suffer
And they got nastier as they grew old

And what became of Hi Jolly's fate?
Lost his job when the Corps had ended
For a bit ran a small camel freight trade
And married a woman that he had befriended

He changed his name to Philip
Had kids and he settled down
Got his US Citizenship
and chose Arizona for his hometown.

He lived a regular life content
Though his camel troop was no more
And in '35 Arizona built a monument
to Hi Jolly! and the Camel Corps

CHORUS
The US went to Turkey
To get camels for 30 Grand
Came back with 70 quirky
Big animals for the plan
Hadji Ali came along with them
The camel trainer, he knew the score
His name, misheard by the army men
Hi Jolly! and the Camel Corps
